Interview with George
Lucas / Letterman Digital Arts Center
Workplace Design is Changing
the Way We Work
Dr. Greg Ketchum, 04/09/05

Introduction
Last Saturday George Lucas invited members of
the press and a few guests over for a preview
of the Letterman Digital Arts Center, the new
home of LucasArts, ILM, and the executive offices
of LucasFilm. The Letterman Center is not just
a new location, but is a great example of a
growing trend of using workspace design to take
down barriers, increase collaboration and promote
innovation.
You might even say that workspaces are being
designed specifically to change the way people
work and there are 3 key skills that you need
to develop in order to succeed in this new type
workspace. But before I talk about those skills
let’s take a look at my interview with
George Lucas. I asked him about his goals for
moving these three formerly separate companies
into one shared workspace and how the workspace
itself was designed to meet those goals.

Summary
If you want to be the kind of person that forward
thinking companies like the Lucas companies
want and that the new workspaces are designed
for work on developing these 3 skills…
Collaborate: Across boundaries
of department, team, division, etc.
- Innovate: Identify and take
advantage of opportunities brought about by
the new workspace design.
- Influence: Exert influence
when you don’t have control over the people
and resources you need to get your job done.
